Happy Birthday Duke! (And lots of new posts below)

August is FULL of birthdays for us!

My handsome husband turned 32 this year although I wished him a very happy "33" birthday in his card! Oops! Got to love the wife that adds an extra year to your age! ;)

Although it is his birthday, I feel like I am the one that gets the gift each day. I am married to a wonderful man and I feel so blessed to have him as my husband. Thank you for being such a wonderful husband and father! I love you more than you'll ever know.

(And just for the record...Addison snapped this photo. Not bad, huh?)

Happy Birthday Mom!

I have always said how blessed I am to have such a fantastic Mother but I don't think I ever TRULY knew how blessed I was until I had Addison. There's just something about becoming a mother yourself that completely opens your eyes to all of the sacrifices your own Mother has made for you over the years.

I don't know what I would do without my Mom. She is truly my best friend but yet has managed to remain my Mom, all at the same time. I can only hope that Addison and I have the same type of relationship that her and I do when Addison gets to be my age. Just let me say...I've got some HUGE shoes to fill when it comes to the Mom department.

Thank you Mom for all of the sacrifices you made for me and still continue to make for me each day. Thank you for loving Duke like he is your own son. Thank you for loving Addison more than should be allowed. And last but not least, thank you for loving Dad and always providing a good example of what a loving wife and mother should look like. I love you more than I could ever tell you and I hope you had an amazing birthday weekend!

Happy Birthday Maw-Maw!

I am SO behind on wishing all the wonderful people in my life HAPPY BIRTHDAY so the next few posts will be my attempt to try and catch up. We celebrated Duke's Mom's birthday with some yummy Hibachi food and as you can see...the grand kids had a ball! We managed to get all of them to look at the camera (well sort of!) for a fun shot. The only one missing is little Kami (Jennifer and Brent's little one) who will arrive in November.

After dinner, Addison and Jake ran off their extra energy but stopped long enough to pose for this picture. How cute are they??

Happy Birthday Ruth! Thanks for raising such a wonderful man for me to call my husband and for loving Addison and I so much. I hope you had a wonderful birthday! We love you much!

Birthdays, Birthdays EVERYWHERE!

We had quite the busy weekend last weekend around the Skalon house! First, we celebrated Aiden’s 4th birthday at Monkey Joes on Wednesday and the kids had a blast! Addison LOVES that place! The birthday boy was too busy playing for me to snap any photos of him but he sure was cute!

Hard to believe this baby will be "3" soon!

On Saturday we geared up for a 3-birthday party day! First we headed over to celebrate Mason’s 1st birthday with Nick and Laura. It’s so hard to believe he is one already! We have such an amazing group of friends and it's so neat to watch our kids become friends too!

Mason loved his birthday cake...can't you tell?

Addison loves her Uncle James AKA "Beans"

The Skalons

Jessica and I with our birthday buddies. Crazy that Addison and Landon share the same birthday! We couldn't have planned that if we had tried!

Next we headed over to Carley Walter’s house to celebrate her 2nd birthday. Carley was adorable in her princess outfit and Addison had so much fun playing with her girlfriends. It’s so cute to watch her as she develops her own friendships.

After Carley’s party, we had just enough time to run home, change and pass Addison off to Mom and Dad so we could head over to Wy’s 40th birthday surprise party. Wy’s husband, Chris, did such an amazing job of planning this party for her and keeping it a complete surprise. To make it even more special, he flew her family in town AND got her off work for a week so she could visit with them. All of the girls thought it was amazing and all of the guys are now scared for any of our birthdays to come around! I forgot my camera at home but did get this shot of Wy, Chris and Hayley at Mason's party. Happy 40th Wy!

Needless to say, we were exhausted by Sunday but so glad we got to celebrate with all our friends.

Just for laughs

What can I say...this just cracks me up! The girl can "shake it!" :)

Happy Wednesday!

Poison Control & 911

CONFESSION: LONG before I had a blog..I was a blog reader. Not sure what it is, but I just like to read blogs. There are blogs that I read daily and I've never met the people who write them and probably never will. Weird, huh? Maybe it's a girl thing b/c Duke thinks it's nuts. :)

Thinking about my favorite blogs, all of them are very real. Real in the way that these women all tell it EXACTLY like it is. NO sugar coating, NO air brushing of photos...just REAL moments in their lives no matter how crazy. I always hoped that if I ever decided to start a blog, that's how mine would be. Just real..no matter how good or bad. So in attempt to try and live up to my own hopes for this thing, let me tell you why I won't be winning the Mother of the Year award this year.

Last Tuesday, Addison woke up with a fever and I decide to give her some Tylenol. I managed to make it down the stairs with her on one hip, Bambi, her shoes, blanket and juice cup in the other hand and proceeded to the cabinet in the kitchen. Addison was pitching a fit that she wanted to "help" me pour out the Tylenol so I sat her on the counter to try and make this as "mess-free" as possible. Lucky me, that before we ever got to the pouring part, she spotted something else to occupy her time. Unlucky for me, that it was a bottle of Teething tablets from her teething days.

Just in case you don't know what teething tablets are, they are homeopathic pills that help when babies are teething. Addison was shaking the bottle and pretending it was a rattle for her baby doll and for a moment...things were good. About this time, in walks Duke from work, Addison takes the Tylenol (of course not without a struggle) and gets down to run to Dad and greet him with a hug. Addison then went into the playroom, Duke and I talked about his day, I ran to put clothes in the dryer and Duke yelled up that he was running to the bank. I came downstairs (minutes...and I do mean MINUTES) later and was greeted by Addison who handed me an EMPTY bottle of teething tablets and sweetly said, "I ate them Mommy!" WHAT?!?!?! Seriously??? You fought me to take 1 tsp. of Bubble gum flavored Tylenol and you just ate a bottle of teething tablets?? I asked her again if she was sure and she replied with a, "Yeah!" Like it was no big deal! She then proceeded to stick out her tongue so I could still see that it was still white from the pills. I asked her if they tasted good...and I still got a "Yeah!" Good to know, huh?

Needless to say, I would have preferred to have NOT been alone at this moment. I freaked out and tried to think back to anything I had ever read about children and pill swallowing and then it dawned on me that I didn't know much about this b/c I didn't ever think I would be the type of mother these things happened to! What type of Mom lets their child eat pills?!?

Here's two more things I learned in that 60 sec time frame: A). I don't know the number to poison control (I do now!) and B). You can't call 411 and get the number for poison control...it connected me to a dentist.

So I called 911 and tried to stay calm while I explained to the nice lady on the other end of the line that my child had just eaten a bottle of pills and I swear I'm not an irresponsible parent. Talk about feeling like a loser! She connected me to poison control and I answered another round of questions from another lady and secretly prayed she wasn't sending DCFS out to my house as we spoke.

Just for future reference, a child can eat an entire bottle of teething tablets and still be fine. According to poison control, there is a very small amount of the active ingredient in them so Addison was going to be fine. Me on the other hand, I felt like I needed to take a responsible parenting class.

So...that is why I won't be winning any awards for my parenting skills this year and this might just knock me out of the running for a few years.

How's that for being real???

Mom vs. Dad

I hear on a daily basis how much Addison looks like Duke and I have to admit that I think she does also. However, my side of the family always comments on how much she looks like me when I was a baby (and I secretly LOVE this because I don't hear it often).

So...what do you guys think???
